Black Girl Magic*

I knew before coming to New Mexico, I would have to put my hair into a protective style. There was no way for me  keep up my hair regimen away from home and doing my hair would be one less thing for me to worry about. A few days before my departure, I put marley twists in my hair. They are super long and I really like them.

When I was waiting to board my plane in Phoenix the woman behind me says, "I saw you when you walked to the gate and I just knew I had to ask about your hair......its just so amazing" As a Black girl who changes her hair quite often, I wasn't really surprised by her statement but her enthusiasm was a bit much. She asked more questions but thankfully, she asked before touching my hair. I told her how it took me 4 hours to do and that the hair can be purchased at Sally's.

When I finally got to New Mexico and got acquainted with the facility, I wasn't really expecting my hair to be the topic of conversation but it was. A few technicians have asked if it was my real hair; one of them touched my hair mid conversation. It was awkward. But I handled it with a laugh even though I was uncomfortable. There were a lot of questions about whether my hair was really this long or if it even was my real hair.

Yesterday during a few counseling sessions, I had to redirect the conversation from my hair back to the medications; there were about 3-4 counseling sessions that involved my hair.  This grandmother said she thought I was beautiful and so was my hair. I couldn't agree more :) She went on to say, "I enjoy when people of your kind braid their hair." Again I could do nothing but laugh.

Moral of the story: Black Girls are fascinating wherever they go.
